That woman was Dr. Linda Backman, Psychologist and Grief Counselor. I had no idea of her ability, talent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], compassion and many years of experience in the field of grief, counseling, lecturing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and more. Had I known, I probably would have been too intimidated to approach her so boldly.
That's my story-or at least this part of it. It's also the story of millions of women each year who just want comfort and understanding after miscarriage. They simply want to be heard, supported, loved,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and have their grief and loss recognized for what it IS-the loss of a baby loved, but never held.
Our past shapes who we are today. Although we can't live in the past, there are lessons to be learned from it. What we do with those lessons is completely up to us. There's no right or wrong. Simply follow your heart.
Why am I on this path,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? What planted my feet here? Why am I so driven to reach out to women who have miscarried?
My path after miscarriage was one full of pain and adversity, loneliness and grief, isolation and dismissal. I felt there was no one to turn to who truly knew what I was living. One day I was four and a half months pregnant-and very much in love with my unborn child-the next I was told my baby was no longer
'viable' and felt as if the rug had been ripped from under me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. My whole life changed. The way I saw the world changed. My miscarriage left a stamp on my heart that never went away. Ever,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
All I needed to hear were five words after I miscarried: "I'm sorry for your loss." That's it. Those five, little words do more than any well thought out phrases of 'comfort' ever could. They acknowledge a woman's grief and loss after miscarriage. They let her know her pain is real-as real as her baby was.
Eleven years and one divorce later, I was sitting at the kitchen table and was overcome with such a strong feeling it was impossible to ignore. I knew, without a doubt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was meant to take my pain and growth after miscarriage, flip it around, and help others. I wanted to do everything I could to prevent
women from feeling like I did...alone, misunderstood, and like my baby meant nothing. I didn't want women walking into bookstores or searching online for a book to tell them they weren't crazy for feeling like they did, only to find books
about having babies, not losing one to miscarriage. Yes, there were books out there...but I didn't find one that truly spoke to my heart.

Creating miscarriage awareness is my mission, along with helping those who have lived it. The United States is not the only country that tends to dismiss miscarriage and its aftermath. The lack of validation of a woman's grief after miscarriage seems an epidemic. Women all over the world are crying out, "Hear me, please! I have suffered a real LOSS- the loss of my BABY. Why can't you understand? Why don't you treat me like a woman who lost her baby and all her hopes, plans and dreams for her baby? I lost my baby..."

Not being one who believes in coincidence, a woman contacted me around the same time and left a very simple message on one of my older websites: "If there's anything I can do to help..." I went out on a limb, emailed and asked, "How'd you like to write the foreword and a few opening chapters for my new, expanded book about miscarriage?"
Thus began my journey, which began with a small, downloadable ebook some five years ago. Several years later, I approached my publisher about expanding my book, I Never Held You, into a longer, more comprehensive paperback with tools and suggestions for healing. I didn't need to 'sell' my publisher the concept
of a book about miscarriage. The numbers already spoke volumes. Women from all over the world had downloaded the small ebook. There was a need-and I had more help inside to fill the void. The words spilled onto the page.
Never would I have dreamed that nearly sixteen-years after my own miscarriage, I'd be the author of a book about miscarriage, healing and recovery, and host of a website which helps women,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and their families, who have suffered either one miscarriage-or more than one.
My journey has also taught me this: people with very good intentions just don't know what to say to a woman who has miscarried. That includes much of the medical community, too. While not meant to be a dig to any group, it must be said that the woman who has miscarried needs to be treated with the respect and dignity she deserves. Expressions like: You're young, you can always have another; It was meant to be; It's for the best-there was probably something wrong with the baby; do NOT help. They hurt. They do nothing to help a woman who just lost her child. The child she loved with all her heart, but never held. That's why creating miscarriage awareness is so important to me. The more people 'get it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],' the fewer those dismissive comments will be. Subsequently, support will grow...and grow...and grow.
If you don't know what to say to a woman who has miscarried, either give her a hug or say, "I'm sorry for your loss." You need not say anything more. Whatever you do, please don't tell her to get over it, move on, or it was meant to be.
Yet, here I am, reading incoming posts daily at MiscarriageHelp.com, and responding to them with every ounce of empathy I posses. I am still deeply moved by each and every comment, and have been brought to tears many times. My heart
is connected to each woman who shares her deepest feelings. I know that will never change.

I wondered why her self-talk was so unkind, so I asked her to imagine what it would be like to really know that she was a good person and deserved love. She tried,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but could not even imagine what it would be like. She said, "I just can't go there. It's just not real." I sat with her for a minute or so just connecting with what it must be like to be unable to even imagine seeing yourself as a good person. Then I asked her to try saying, "I am unwilling to even imagine seeing myself as a good person because..." and to finish that sentence without pre-thinking the ending.
At the beginning of our next session, Mary told me she was feeling much better than she had in a long time, but she was very adamant that she was not entirely better. She said that she was now able to make sense out of her low self esteem, and that it no longer felt like something that was intrinsic to who she was. She said that her depression was much better but that it was definitely still there.
I asked to try imagining herself in high school and saying, "When I feel bad about myself, it is because people are treating me like I don't matter. When I feel good, it is because they are treating me like I'm special." When she repeated those sentences, she said they felt powerfully true. I asked her to try saying them again as her adult self. She did and cried more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], realizing how rarely people ever treat her like she is special any more. With just a few minutes left, I asked her to write down those sentences and spend at least five minutes with them twice a day. When scheduled our next session for three weeks later to give her time to process wha we had uncovered.
Mary had two distinct purposes for being depressed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and each of them only needed to be partially discovered in order to change. First, she learned that she felt bad about herself not because she was a defective person, but that she felt that way when people were being unkind to her. Her purpose for seeing herself as deserving the treatment she got could have been to avoid abandonment, feel like the world is a place with justice, or any number of others. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when she realized that it changed depending on how she was being treated, she realized that it did not mean she was inherently defective,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it no longer felt as true. Second,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she realized that being depressed had always been a way to avoid "having to do anything." I'm not sure if her depression had served as safe hiding place or a way to get people to do things for her, but when she experienced it as something she did for a purpose, it was no longer something out of her control.
Just then, she told me that she had a flash of what she was like in high school. She said that she was miserable at home with her verbally abusive parents, but that as soon as she arrived at school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was happy and filled with confidence. I wondered why and asked how she made sense of the difference. She told me that she was getting excellent grades in high school and the editor of her year book. She said it was the only time in her life she had felt confident, and that her confidence had lead to having lots of friends. When I asked when it went away, she said that she had always felt horrible at home. She told me that when she went to college, she visited a counselor to try to work out some of her issues with her family and that he had put her on a serious psychiatric drug. She had very bad side effects from it and was no longer able to excell in her classes, which had a strong impact on her confidence. We paused for a while to grieve that terrible mistake.
I then brought us back to her purpose in calling me -- relieving her depression. I asked her to remember what is was like to arrive at highschool and go from feeling depressed to confident. I asked her to try to picture herself just as the change was happening in the morning and waited for her to do so. When she was there, I asked her to say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "The thing that's different now is..." and to finish that sentence. She said, "The difference here is that people think I'm special." and started to cry. At this point, I felt like I was beginning to understand. It seemed to me that when people were treating her like she was special,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she felt good about herself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and when they were not she felt bad. I wondered if that was still true.
Self esteem, self accpetance and a sense of self-worth are vital to feeling happy. When we lose the sense that we are worthy or loveable, it is easy to become depressed. In this example we find that a woman's depression is rooted in both seeing herself as worthless, and in wanting to avoid engaging with the world. We also find that in discovering her hidden purposes for being depressed, they are no longer compelling and she quickly recovers.
I asked her to imagine herself when she would first become depressed, and I asked how old she was. She was seven, and I asked Mary if she could try to become that little girl for a while so I could talk to her. When she was ready I said hello and asked the little girl if she gets depressed. She said she does because her mom is really mean and calls her names. I told her I was sorry that her mom did that. Then I asked if she knows grown-up Mary, and she said she did. I asked her to tell grown-up Mary what she should do when people are mean to her. She said, "What should she do when people aren being mean to her?" and fell silent for a few moments. She said, "If you get depressed, you don't have to do anything." and paused a long time. She continued,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "If you get depressed, you can just sit around and you don't have to do anything." Judging by her tone of voice and the long drawn out pauses, I knew that she was in a deep place and I let her have as much time there as she needed. We spend the rest of the session saying those sentences and letting them feel true. When we ended, she thought she would need a month to process what had happened. However, she called a few days prior to her appointment and cancelled saying that she had fully recovered and was working again.
That made sense to me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because I still didn't understand exactly why she would feel bad about herself when other people were uncaring to her, as opposed to getting angry, trying to please them, or any of the other possible responses people have. I find that it is important to discover the sense to all of these questions for the deepest kind of change to happen.
